SEO Career Guide: What SEO Specialists Do and How to Start (No Degree Needed)

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of helping websites appear higher in Google and other search engines, and increasingly in AI-generated answers. An SEO career suits people who enjoy a mix of analysis, writing and technical problem-solving. It’s also one of the easiest marketing careers to start on your own, because you can practise on a real website from day one.

What does an SEO specialist do?

SEO work usually falls into three areas:

AreaTypical tasks
Technical SEOMaking sure search engines can crawl and index the site: site speed, structure, redirects, structured data, sitemaps
Content and on-page SEOKeyword research, planning content that answers searchers’ questions, optimising titles, headings and internal links
Off-page and digital PREarning links and mentions from other websites

On top of these, every SEO specialist spends a lot of time on reporting and analysis: tracking rankings, traffic and conversions in tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, and explaining what changed and why.

SEO in the age of AI search

Google’s AI Overviews and AI chat tools have changed how people search. SEO now also includes making content clear, well-sourced and trustworthy enough to be cited in AI answers. The fundamentals (helpful content, technical health and authority) still matter most.

Skills you need

  • Analytical thinking: spotting patterns in data and testing ideas.
  • Writing and editing: many SEO wins come from better content.
  • Technical basics: HTML, how websites and CMSs like WordPress work, and ideally some JavaScript and SQL.
  • Tools: Google Search Console, GA4, Screaming Frog, and keyword/backlink tools such as Ahrefs or Semrush.
  • Communication: persuading developers, writers and managers to implement changes.

Where SEOs work

  • Agencies: variety across many clients and fast learning.
  • In-house: depth in one business, closer to revenue.
  • Freelance or consulting: popular once you have a track record.

SEO pay

SEO specialists are grouped by BLS with market research analysts and marketing specialists, who earned a median of $78,760 in May 2025 (BLS). Junior SEO executives start below that, while senior SEOs, technical specialists and heads of SEO earn more. Marketing managers, a common senior destination, earned a median of $166,790.

How to start an SEO career

  1. Build your own website. A simple WordPress blog on a topic you know. Grow its traffic and document what you did.
  2. Learn from free, reliable sources: Google Search Central documentation, Google Search Console and GA4 training.
  3. Practise audits: crawl small sites and write up issues and fixes.
  4. Help a local business or charity with its website for real-world results.
  5. Apply for junior roles at agencies, which train new SEOs and offer variety.
  6. Show results in interviews: “grew organic traffic from 200 to 3,000 monthly visits in six months” beats any certificate.

FAQ

Is SEO a good career in 2026?

Yes. Search is changing with AI, but businesses still depend on organic visibility, and people who understand both search and AI-driven discovery are in demand.

Do I need a degree for SEO?

No. Many successful SEOs are self-taught. A portfolio of results matters more than a degree.

How long does it take to learn SEO?

You can learn the basics in a few months, but becoming strong, especially in technical SEO, takes a few years of hands-on work.
